I am thrilled to share my interview with amazing Rhian Davies, the Mindset and Performance Coach that I photographed last year in London.  We shoot the brand photos in my favourite private membership club AllBright, on the beautiful streets of Mayfair and in a cozy Airbnb flat in Soho.

Rhian is a Mindset and Performance Coach who specialises in transformational coaching and mentoring. Empowering high performing women to reclaim their power and take control of their life. Educating and guiding them to develop self awareness, build confidence and eradicate self doubt by mastering their mindset and emotions. A background in business and psychology along with an unwavering passion for helping women live a purposeful life on their terms.

I absolutely love sharing inspiring stories and inteviews with incredible women like Rhian.

What career did you have before you set up your own business, and what made you want to start it?

I’ve always been great at building relationships with people and my success is based on my ability to connect with people and understand them. Coaching and mentoring has always been a huge part of my career, even in the very early days when I was teaching people how to use a computer (yes, I am that old!). Before committing full time in my business as it now looks, I was coaching 50% of the time with private and corporate clients and the other 50% I was contracting for different technology and media brands as a Fractional Leader, which meant jumping into various senior leadership roles for 3-6 months, whipping the team/business into shape and then leaving when the ‘real’ leader was hired. It was fast paced, it could be stressful and it had burnout written all over it!

I have always been passionate about seeing other people, especially women thrive. I firmly believe their success supports mine. I saw over and over women being overlooked, burning themselves out and second guessing their potential or worthiness to go for the things they wanted for themselves, both in career and life.  Having lived through and conquered many of the challenges these women face I knew I would have more impact coaching and mentoring, so I decided to focus on that 100% of the time!

What was your main source of motivation when you started your own business?

Coaching and mentoring is my zone of genius. I wanted to be a role model to other women, showing them through my own lived experience that in order to be successful in career and life it doesn’t need to be to the detriment of themselves. They don’t need to compromise themselves so others aren’t compromised!

I empower myself and others to live life on our own terms, doing the work we love, with people we love to work with. I want to inspire others to dream big as I do the same. Life is too short for anything else!

How long did it take you to go from just having an idea to actually starting your business?

It was an evolution that led me to exactly where I am now. The focus never changed but the scope and impact has grown. If I waited for it to always be perfect and have everything figured out, I wouldn’t be where I am today. One of my favourite quotes is from Martin Luther King Jr who says “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”

What did you find hardest?

Feeling like I needed to have it all figured out and everything had to be perfect, that tripped me up for a while! I felt like I was spinning in circles not getting anywhere, but that journey was necessary for me to build the confidence I needed to take action. Every time I saw through a commitment I had made to myself it reinforced that I was capable and deserving of what I was trying to create. Imposter Syndrome is real!

If you could go back and do it all again, would you do anything differently?

Not differently as such but knowing what I know now, I would have ‘gone for it’ more! Less second guessing, less questioning my ability, less worrying about everything being ‘right’ and more shoving aside my fears, more trusting it will all work out and more taking big risks because in my experience they always pay off. My success is based on my willingness to take a risk where others won’t.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Keep going. Consistency is queen. As cliche as it sounds, it really is progress over perfection.

How was your experience with the personal brand photoshoot?

I loved that you took the time to get to know what my business was all about, why I was doing the brand shoot and what I was hoping to get out of it. I felt relaxed, in my power and surprised myself by actually enjoying being in front of the camera!

How have your customers/ potential customers responded to your personal branding shoot?

Everyone so far has loved the pictures they have seen. They have only been informally shared on social media, so I’m excited to see how they come alive in both my new program launch and website.

Who would be your 5 ideal dinner party guests?

I am very easy to please and unimpressed by celebrities or people I don’t actually know. Meaningful conversations with people I want to keep close and make my heart feel full is really all I need. So it would be a mix of people I love and people I miss that are no longer with me. I have so many questions for them about life and what they wish they had done differently or wisdom they wish they had passed on to me but didn’t get the time and I also know they would love to be reunited and see how happy I am now!

Do you have any pearls of wisdom for other women who have just set up their own business or are thinking about it?

Go for it. You don’t need to know everything, you’ll figure it out as you go. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and invest in yourself, both financially and in the commitment, you give what you’re trying to create.

Setting up your own business can be hard, and is possibly the biggest self leadership journey you’ll go on but it’s also the most rewarding and liberating. The ability to create life on your terms with a business or career you love is life changing.  You deserve to gift that to yourself and others deserve to have access to what you are offering. There is enough for everyone, regardless of ‘how many others’ are doing what you do. Only YOU are you and that’s your USP so don’t play small or feel like you need to fit a mold. You do you boo.
