I am excited to share my interview with the wonderful coach & speaker Joy Poole, where she introduces her new powerful and accessible coaching series for women in their early stage of career. I love the fact that 50% of the proceeds of the first series Joy is given to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal (Disasters Emergency Committee

When Joy approached me about branding session for her new website I was thrilled. We decided to start the brand photoshoot at the All Bright members club in London. I love to photographing branding portraits there as the place is chic and provides clean backdrop for branding photos. Then we headed into the streets of Mayfair and we finished the session at Joy’s beautiful home officce at Notting Hill.

Tell me about your coaching business?

  • I get to be curious for a living!
  • I help female leaders to identify, articulate and GET what they want out of their careers and lives.
  • And I do this by getting deeply curious about what drives them and what holds them back.

I work primarily with mid-to-senior level executives. HOWEVER, I see a deep need for coaching at an earlier stage of career/life. The problem is that many women with less than 15 years’ experience feel priced out of or not yet ready for 1-to-1 coaching. Which is why I created The Propel Series.

What is The Propel Series?

In this interactive workshop series, I guide women with less than 15 years’ professional experience + big aspirations for their lives and careers, through a powerful framework designed to bring clarity, calmness and confidence to the pursuit of their own success – however they define it.

  • 3x90min workshops over 6 weeks
  • Up to 16 awesome women
  • Leave with a clearer understanding of what the heck you (really) want, what is holding you back, and steps you can take to create your own reality.

You can register interest for The Propel Series HERE.

What career did you have before you set up your own business, and what made you want to try something new?

I spent the first 20 years of my career climbing the ranks of big consulting and tech firms.  I started off in Detroit, however my consulting, sales and leadership roles at Arthur Andersen, Capgemini and Facebook (to name a few) bounced me all over the world and ultimately settled me in London in 2012.  By the time I left Facebook seven years later, I was a Director leading a global team responsible for maintaining and growing partnerships with the world’s largest advertisers.

All along this journey, I battled with crippling perfectionism and Imposter Syndrome. When I finally learned to un-learn those destructive mental habits, I became fascinated with how our consciousness has the power to determine the trajectory of our careers, businesses and lives.  Helping others to tap into the answers and success they already had inside their own hearts and minds became my favourite part of any role I had.  And now, as a leadership coach and speaker, I get to do just that on a daily basis.

What was your main source of motivation?

Through having a fabulous coach myself, I came to understand that coaching is simply helping others to step into who they truly are.  And as it turns out, when I’m helping others to step into their truth, I feel like I am stepping into mine.  If there is better motivation than that, I haven’t found it yet!

How long did it take you to go from just having an idea to actually starting your business?

About 6 months.

What did you find hardest?

Shifting my mindset around trying to avoid failure.  Once I embraced it as an essential part of the journey, I started having more fun and everything started flowing much more easily and quickly.

If you could go back and do it all again, would you do anything differently?

Nope!  I don’t deal in regrets.  I believe everything I’ve experienced has meaning.  Now, can I use those learnings in order to experience even more joy and meaning?  Share them so that people can benefit from them perhaps earlier than I did?  Absolutely.  That idea fuels my work every single day.

What made you decide to have a personal branding photoshoot?

I needed potential clients to get a really authentic feel for who I am when they visited my website.  I spent a lot of time crafting the words that would powerfully tell my story and needed the photos to do the same.

How was the experience for you?

Fabulous!  The prep that went into the shoot put me at ease and got me into the right mindset for a shoot that could produce pictures of me truly being me!  The session itself was fun and super productive.  And the outputs speak for themselves.  I was thrilled with the photos and am already thinking about a refresh session!

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Does it count if it came from Brené Brown?  Or is that too cliché?    She says:  ‘The best, most transformational leaders do not have all the answers.  They just ask great questions.’  This inspires me to stay present and curious above ALL else.  When I’m in a session with a client.  When the business isn’t doing what I expected it to.  When my 5-year old isn’t doing what I expected him to!   Or crucially, when I’m reacting to a situation in a way that isn’t aligned with who I know I truly am or what I truly want out of my life and my work.
